Exceptionally Rare Circa 1860 Walnut Military Officers Campaign Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this exceptionally rare and very fine solid walnut Military Officers Campaign chest of drawers.

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote, please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price.

If you’re in the market for the absolute finest campaign drawers ever to come to market then look no further, these are sublime. I’ve only ever seen one other chest made with this formation, I’ve bought maybe 1000 campaign chests over the many years I’ve been in the trade, the other one I saw I kept for myself which is exactly what I would be doing with this one had I not kept the other.

This is all walnut, you will never see another walnut campaign chest, the timber was too expensive. This is an officer’s chest, there is a hat drawer to the left, glove drawer to the middle, these are rare additions in themselves. The central drawer comes out to reveal a large green leather writing slope, the base has two metal clips which when released opens up more storage, open the back top section of the writing slope and you find more storage with a little cupboard, there is another drawer that has a stationary filing section, the list goes on.

Condition wise is period correct for a campaign used piece. There will be marks etc everywhere as you would expect, all of which add to the charm and charisma of the piece. There is some warping to the large base drawers, but they all still operate just fine.

We have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, it simply glows in person.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A military campaign chest, or officers chest of drawers, is a piece of portable furniture designed to be split into two separate sections for ease of transport during military travel. Originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces were constructed specifically for British officers stationed across the Empire.

Campaign chests were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, or walnut to withstand varied climates. Key features include flush-fitting brass corner brackets, recessed brass handles to prevent snagging, and heavy iron or brass side carrying handles.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature a two-part stackable construction, flush hardware set into hand-cut mortises, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and evidence of screw-in feet that were removed during transit. Original locks often display stamps from period makers or military suppliers.

A campaign chest serves as a functional statement piece in a hallway, home office, or bedroom. The clean lines and brass hardware allow it to integrate seamlessly into modern minimalist schemes as well as traditional heritage interiors.

Keep walnut furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the timber from drying out or fading. Apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly, and dust brass fittings with a soft dry cloth.
