Seventeenth-century chests of drawers are characterised by sturdy timber construction, heavy proportions, and geometric applied mouldings on the drawer fronts, reflecting the transition from joined chests to drawer-based storage.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid oak using hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged framing, and panelled sides, often fitted with wrought iron or brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authenticity is identified through hand-planed surfaces, irregular tool marks, hand-carved joints, timber shrinkage, and the oxidisation and wear patterns consistent with age.

Pair the piece with minimalist contemporary surroundings to highlight its architectural texture, using the surface for simple ceramics or large-scale artwork to balance its heavy visual weight.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically treat the wood with traditional bees-wax polish to preserve the finish.
