Antique Cuenca Spanish Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

A highly decorative antique Cuenca Spanish rug lovely European flowing scroll design and a very soft palette.  Woven with wool rather than piled they are knotted in staggered stages. Handwoven in the city of Cuenca, between Madrid and Valencia, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries but also more recently as is this early 20th century example.

With both Persian and European styles they are beautiful decorative carpets with subtle designs and tones. This rug has delicate scrolling vines in ivory, muted pale blues, soft yellows and berry reds.  The condition is excellent with a soft medium high wool pile all over.  A very light decorative Spanish rug in a hard to find small size and natural pale colours.

Set in the mountains of east-central Spain lies the City of Cuenca. Sitting east of Madrid it is founded by Moors, it is a historic walled town with steep cobbled streets and medieval castle ruins. Cuenca has been famous for weaving carpets and rugs since the 11th century.

We offer the service of viewing our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire and all over the UK & Europe by appointment.  Request a home visit to choose a convenient day and time to view this antique Spanish rug in-situ.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Cuenca rug is a hand-knotted wool carpet originating from the historic rug-weaving centre of Cuenca, Spain. These rugs are recognized for their distinctive Renaissance and Baroque patterns, often featuring symmetrical scrollwork, lattice designs, and stylized flora or fauna.

Traditional Cuenca rugs are crafted using natural wool fibres for the pile, tied onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. The dyes were historically sourced from natural plant and mineral elements to create rich shades of blue, red, gold, and cream.

Authentic pieces display hand-tied Spanish knots or symmetric Turkish knots on a coarse wool foundation, often resulting in a slightly stiff handle. Design features typically include structured floral lattice, vine scrolls, heraldic motifs, or bird figures enclosed within defined borders.

A Spanish Cuenca rug functions well as a focal point in a neutral room, adding architectural geometry and historical character. Place it beneath simple furniture made of oak, walnut, or modern polished metals to let the complex carpet pattern remain visually prominent.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush to prevent fibre distortion. Address spills immediately by blotting with a dry white cloth, rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear and light exposure, and use a specialist rug cleaner for periodic deep maintenance.
