19th Century Mahogany Pedestal Desk

19th century
Sold by Culvertons
Description

When we were approached by the previous owners of this Victorian mahogany pedestal desk (Circa 1860) to see if we were interested in purchasing, we could see that it had the attributes we always look for in a piece of antique furniture. Even if an item is tired, through use and neglect, as long as it is structurally sound, has a good untouched surface, that the majority of its locks and knobs are original, and its proportions are pleasing to the eye, then our team (restorer, locksmith, wood turner and polisher) can sensitively restore and revive the piece so it can be enjoyed by future generations. This lovely desk is a prime example of what can be achieved with experience and judgement.

This desk separates into three pieces making it easily transportable. It stands at the recommended comfortable working height and can be supplied with castor covers if it is to be placed on a polished floor (for maneuverability underneath each pedestal there are four original castors)

As you can imagine after 150 years of use the original writing surface needed replacing, so with no expense spared, we asked our specialist to traditionally lay a new high quality leather hide, sensitively colour it by hand and then decorate it with tooling and gold leaf.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
