Mistral in Provence, a Windy Day in the South of France Farmhouses and Olive Trees Large Antique French Charcoal Drawing

1940 - 1960

A wonderful drawing depicting the magnitude of the mistral winds over small provençal stone houses which are nestled in a valley. Large strong and bold like its subject, it was drawn in brown charcoal on heavy laid paper by an assured, virtuoso hand. The artwork is signed and dated at the lower left. I have not been able to identify (or even decipher!) the signature.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century French charcoal drawings often reflect expressive draftsmanship and regional subjects, capturing light, texture, and rustic rural architecture with bold tonal contrast.

Artists utilised natural or compressed charcoal sticks on woven, laid, or heavy cartridge paper, frequently applying fixative solutions to preserve the friable carbon particles.

Authentic works exhibit distinct physical layering, visible friable pigment under magnification, age-appropriate paper oxidisation, and original signatures or dates in pencil or charcoal.

Frame the drawing with a wide neutral mount and thin dark timber frame, layering it against minimalist walls or alongside vintage furniture to add historic depth.

Display the artwork behind UV-filtering glass with non-contact glazing spacers, keeping it away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and foxing.
