This pair of 19th-century French bronze sculptures depicts Neapolitan fishermen dancing in the sand with shells and fish at their feet, with one figure playing a tambourine and the other castanets. Both figures wear draped loincloths and display figurative poses with dark patinated finishes in dark brown and greenish tones. The sculptures are mounted on original round Sienna marble plinth bases and bear signatures on the base. Each piece measures 15 cm wide by 15 cm deep by 44 cm high. Suitable for a gentleman's library or study, these decorative items bring classical academic character to a room. They sit well atop a sideboard, a mantelpiece, or a display cabinet, introducing distinct figural movement and bronze texture to interior spaces. The dark patinated surfaces contrast against the light-veined circular marble footings, while the dynamic postures capture traditional Italian dance scenes inspired by visits to Naples.

During the 19th century in France, figurative sculpture experienced a major resurgence driven by advanced bronze casting techniques and popular themes drawn from classical antiquity, Italian genre subjects, and romanticism.

These pieces were crafted from cast bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, followed by meticulous hand-chasing of surface details and chemical patination to achieve rich dark tones.

Authentic examples typically display refined hand-chiselled finishing, sculptor signatures or foundry marks incised into the base, substantial physical weight, and natural historic surface wear.

Position the pair symmetrically on a dark wood sideboard, marble mantelpiece, or within a curated bookcase to add tactile sculpture and depth against light modern backdrops.

Dust periodically with a clean, dry microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush, and apply a thin coating of neutral microcrystalline wax once a year to guard against moisture and oxidisation.
