We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ecclesiastical wood carvings of the 17th century are sacred sculptures and decorative architectural panels created for churches, chapels, and private devotional spaces throughout Europe. Often crafted from dense hardwoods like oak or walnut, these works characteristic of the Baroque period display expressive figures and dramatic drapery.

Carvers during this era primarily used local hardwoods such as walnut, oak, lime, or chestnut. The timber was seasoned prior to hand-carving using gouges and chisels, and pieces were sometimes finished with natural waxes, varnishes, or polychrome painted decoration.

Authentic period carvings exhibit hand-tool marks, uneven wear patterns, and deep natural patination in crevices. The reverse side typically shows hand-sawn surfaces or gouge tracks, along with shrinkage cracks and oxidisation consistent with centuries of age.

A carved timber relief or figure can be mounted as a focal wall sculpture in a hallway or study. Positioning the piece above a console table or within an alcove provides a strong architectural accent that contrasts against simple contemporary backdrops.

Keep wooden carvings in a stable environment away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement or cracking. Dust gently with a soft dry brush and apply a clear bees wax polish sparingly to maintain the protective patina.
