This is a lovely oil on canvas of a Scottish lady.

It has been framed under glass which has preserved the painting in its original condition. Circa 1860

Nineteenth-century portraiture often emphasised realism, psychological depth, and dramatic lighting influenced by romanticism and academic traditions.

These works typically utilised ground oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within moulded wooden frames finished with gesso and gold leaf.

Authentication involves examining canvas weave density, pigment composition through scientific analysis, stretcher bar construction, and historical framing techniques characteristic of the period.

An antique portrait creates a striking focal point when hung against moody wall colours or paired with clean-lined modern furniture to provide textural and historical contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and cleaning surfaces gently with professional conservation methods.
