Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 19th-century French marquetry furniture is characterised by intricate wood veneers fitted together to create pictorial scenes, floral patterns, or geometric motifs. These pieces often feature gilded bronze mounts, curved silhouettes, and fitted marble tops reflecting Louis XV and Transitional influences.

Craftsmen utilised exotic wood veneers such as rosewood, kingwood, tulipwood, and fruitwoods laid over solid oak or pine carcasses. Accent materials included cast ormolu or brass fittings alongside shaped marble tops.

Authenticity can be determined by examining hand-sawn timber veneers, hand-dovetailed drawer construction, and cast markings on brass or bronze fittings. Original marble tops often feature unpolished undersides bearing hand-chiselled tool marks.

A French marquetry cabinet can serve as a focal point in a modern hallway or living area when paired with neutral paint tones. Surrounding the piece with understated contemporary lighting and minimalist artwork balances its detailed visual work.

To protect timber veneer, keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources that cause wood movement and veneer lifting. Clean the marble top using pH-neutral cleaners and dust wood surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth.
