Boats on the Shore, Evening Clouds Over Vigo Bay, Spain, Marine Landscape Beach by French Henri Cadiou Oil on Canvas

1940 - 1960
Description

A wonderful atmospheric seascape by French Henri Cadiou (1906-1989), depicting the Galician beach of Vigo - a rare painting, exhibited at a major international exhibition in 1958!

Henri Cadiou (26 March 1906, Paris – 6 April 1989) was a French painter and lithographer known for his realist, hyperrealist and trompe-l'oeil paintings. He is credited with being a founder of the "Peintres de la réalité" art mouvement, which later was known as the Réalité/Trompe l'Oeil group

This group of Realist painters had their first exhibition at the Carmine Gallery - in the Saint Germain area of Paris - in 1949. Cadiou would continue with solo shows in prestigious French and International Galleries (Galerie Romanet/Paris, Galerie Bradtke/Luxembourg, as well as in Salons such as the Salon des Indépendants, and the Salon Comparaisons.

Henri Cadiou's work has been shown with the Realité/Trompe l'Oeil Group in Rio de Janeiro, Washington, New York, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Florence, Munich, and all over France.

The second international exhibition of the "Painters of Reality" group was held in Brussels in 1958 - and the painting we present here was Henri Cadiou's exhibited submission to it.

On the verso of the original frame is the label from the exhibition, with the title of the work "Vigo Bay", as well as a customs stamp. Vigo Bay - Ria de Vigo - is an estuary in Galicia, Spain.

An oil on panel measuring 29 x 55cm, the painting is signed and dated (19)58 at the lower left. The overall framed size in its original, good frame -which however shows signs of age/wear - is 44x 70 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Marine landscapes in 20th-century French art typically focus on coastal topographies, light playing across water, and maritime activity, blending observational realism with expressive brushwork to capture coastal atmospheres.

Artists traditionally applied oil pigments bound with linseed oil onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, secured to a wooden stretcher frame and primed with a gesso ground.

Verification involves examining artist signatures, inspecting natural age craquelure across the paint layer, evaluating period-correct timber stretchers, and checking canvas weave and backboard oxidisation.

Position the canvas centrally above a sideboard or mantelpiece, using muted blue and grey tones to complement natural timber furniture and woven textiles for a balanced composition.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, excess heat, and humidity fluctuations. Lightly dust the surface with a soft, dry microfibre brush and consult a professional conservator for deep cleaning.
