Herbert Dicksee "Anxious Hearts" Etching

1900 - 1920
Description

Herbert Thomas Dicksee was a British painter born in 1862. He was best known for his sensitive depictions of animals including dogs, lions and tigers. Dicksee’s family was well-ingrained into the art world; his father was an artist and his nephew, Sir Frank Dicksee, was the president of the Royal Academy in London from 1924–1928. Herbert went on to study at the Slade School of Art in London on a scholarship, and his first painting was exhibited in 1881. Many of Dicksee’s most famous works were transcribed into prints and etchings published by Klackner of London. He died on February 20, 1942 in Hampstead, England.

The present picture "Anxious Hearts" is a lovely example of Dicksee's etchings. It is the first state artist's proof on vellum showing a girl with a bloodhound by a open window. It measures 29"x 21" and is signed lower left in pencil. It is mounted and framed into an oak frame giving an overall size of 43"x 34".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Etchings from this era were produced using an intaglio printing method where metal plates were incised with acid to create detailed tonal artwork, frequently depicting narrative scenes or canine subjects.

Original etchings were printed using oil-based inks applied directly onto heavy cotton or linen rag paper, often featuring distinct plate mark impressions along the margins.

Authentic etchings typically display a visible indented plate mark around the image border, fine raised ink lines under magnification, and artist signatures in the lower margin.

Hang monochrome or sepia prints inside simple wooden or gilt frames to complement traditional libraries, dining rooms, or contemporary gallery walls.

Frame the artwork using acid-free mounting materials and UV-protective glass, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and areas of fluctuating humidity.
