Large 19th Century Chinese Bronze Sectional Jardiniere, C1870

19th century
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Large antique 19th century Chinese bronze sectional jardinière,c1870. This is a large and impressive piece which breaks down into sections. It is nicely cast and decorated extensively with birds and foliage over the bowl and stem. It has aged well with good colour/patina and overall condition is good with only minor surface wear / rubbing and a few very small dents. A few of the lugs which lock the sections in place have worn slightly so it 'wobbles' if moved but is structurally sound and stands well. All these issues are minor and very much as you would expect from a piece of this age. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me with any questions or if you would like to view the item.

Size: 124 cm tall x 27 cm diameter. I will happily ship worldwide.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century late Qing Dynasty, Chinese bronze metalwork often drew inspiration from archaic vessel shapes and imperial imagery, such as dragons and lotus motifs. These sectional stands and jardinieres were crafted for domestic display and international export, representing traditional metal-casting craftsmanship.

These items were predominantly created using lost-wax or piece-mould cast bronze. The sectional design allowed large vertical structures to be cast in separate interlocking pieces, which were then fitted together over a central rod or join.

Authentic pieces display hand-chased relief details, natural wear to the dark patina around hand-handled areas, and substantial weight consistent with solid cast metal. Construction marks from historical casting techniques and sectional fitting joints are also indicators of age.

A bronze pedestal stand can be positioned in an empty corner, hallway entry, or drawing room to introduce vertical height and texture. Designers often pair dark metalwork with neutral wall palettes or stone surfaces to highlight the sculptural silhouette.

Bronze surfaces should be dusted regularly with a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners or water exposure, which can strip historical patination, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface finish.
