A chuval is a large, handwoven bag traditionally used by nomadic Turkmen tribes in Central Asia for storing household goods and bedding inside a yurt.

These pieces are typically constructed with a wool pile on a wool or cotton foundation, utilising natural vegetable and insect-derived dyes to achieve deep red and indigo tones.

Authenticity is determined by examining the knot density, the natural abrash in the wool, traditional tribal guls, and the organic irregularities characteristic of genuine nomadic handweaving.

An antique tribal rug functions effectively as a focal point on neutral timber flooring or as a wall hanging, adding rich texture and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional organic washing when necessary, and keeping the textile away from direct, prolonged sunlight to prevent fading.
