Description

Stunning 18th Century Large engraving by James Basire of the Antiquities of Athens.

The Choregic monument of Lysicrates is one of the earliest in Greece to use the Corinthian architectural order. The frieze running around the top of the monument show Dionysos and his satyrs attacking some pirates who had kidnapped him. The defeated pirates jumped overboard and turned into dolphins.

An 18th-century classical engraving is a printmaking work created by incising designs into a metal plate, usually copper, which is then inked and pressed onto paper. During the Neoclassical period, artists frequently reproduced Greco-Roman reliefs, mythological scenes, and ancient sculptures for publication in scholarly folio volumes.
