This French Provincial chest of drawers originates from the 18th century and adopts a serpentine profile with a shaped front and recessed central panels. Constructed from oak and finished in a weathered grey paint, the piece incorporates elaborate Rococo brass hardware, including decorative keyhole escutcheons on each drawer and scrolling handles, alongside carved panelled drawer fronts and short cabriole feet. Measuring 127 cm wide, 60 cm deep and 79 cm high, the commode provides practical storage with three horizontal rows of drawers. Positioned in a bedroom, hallway or living space, the chest functions as a statement storage surface for clothes, linens or display items while introducing period character. The painted surface displays a deliberately aged, distressed finish that highlights the moulded contours and organic grain of the timber underneath. The low proportions allow the top surface to accommodate lamps, mirrors or decorative accessories.

FAQs

A French serpentine commode is a low chest of drawers featuring a curved front profile that flows in a wave-like shape, popularised during the Louis XV era in 18th-century France.

These chests were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or beech, often finished with painted distemper or lacquer, fitted with cast brass handles, and carved by hand.

Authentic period pieces generally feature hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints, original cast brass or bronze escutcheons, hand-carved aprons, and evidence of hand-planing on the rear paneling.

Position the chest in a hallway, living room, or bedroom as a focal storage anchor, pairing its structured serpentine silhouette with modern artwork or neutral ceramics.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a neutral beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year while avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that strip aged paint.
