Description

An unusual C19th Arts and Crafts copper & iron perdonium/coal scuttle; of large proportions; the exagerated scrolled wrought iron stand with an open spiral twist carrying handle, housing a very shapely riveted copper perdonium, the scrolled hinged lid with a gadrooned knob handle; the interior with a good quality removable zinc liner with two carrying handles; the reverse housing its original copper shovel, also with open spiral twist handle.

This large nineteenth-century Arts and Crafts coal purdonium dates from around 1880 and combines copper, black wrought iron, and brass. The piece consists of a shapely riveted copper body housed inside an exaggerated scrolled wrought iron cradle fitted with an open spiral twist carrying handle and ornate scroll feet. A slanted hinged lid features a gadrooned brass knob handle, while the reverse houses an original copper shovel with a matching spiral twist handle. Brass rivets accent the copper body and frame. Measuring 50.8001 cm high, 35.5601 cm wide, and 63.5001 cm deep, the purdonium is designed to rest on a fireplace hearth. It functions practically as a coal scuttle beside an open fire, while serving as a decorative fireside accessory in a living room or study.
