I imagine this fine nineteenth century pedestal desk (1830-40) would have been made as a one off commission for its original owner - its proportions are quite unusual. It would create a dramatic statement within an office, giving plenty of working space for the user - I could envisage, if it was a requirement, being able to place several computer screens on the top.
The desk has been professionally and sensitively restored.
The writing surface is made of solid mahogany, as are the drawer fronts, up-stand to the back and the majority of the carcass. The drawers liners are constructed from solid oak and are beautifully dovetailed. The locks are original throughout and a key is supplied.
One drawer has its original fittings still in place for pens etc, and the central drawer has been re-fitted as it would have been originally with solid oak partitions.
This desk separates into three pieces for ease of transport.
The original stained softwood backing was never intended to b
...e visible, as such the desk would be best sited against a wall.
The desk stands at a perfect working height, with plenty of room for a substantial desk chair.
Of course, if you so wished a leather hide could be inset into the top to a colour of your choice - this would have to be quoted for separately. However, the top is formed of a magnificent piece of mahogany, which has not suffered unduly from 160 years of use, and I expect, with an occasional wax, will remain in a similar sate for future owners.
