ANTIQUE #SA236559

Portrait Of A Young Boy And His Dog, Early 18th Century: English School.

£6,850    $8,371    €8,113
Oil on canvas in giltwood frame.

An early 18th century naive portrait of a young gentleman, expensively and fashionably dressed...a plain brown coat and a fine silver laced blue waistcoat was a combination much favoured by the English gentry and prosperous merchant class.(See the portrait of John Wright by Heins on this website).

The sitter''s pet dog is shown at his feet... dogs also symbolised trust and loyalty.

This portrait would have been painted by one of the many provincial portraitists working at the time. Self taught, untutored, they frequently created entrancing images of their sitters...rarely flattering, they have a powerful directness that makes them very appealing to the modern viewer.
