Portrait of a Young Boy and His Dog, Early 18th Century: English School.

18th century
Description

Oil on canvas in giltwood frame.

An early 18th century naive portrait of a young gentleman, expensively and fashionably dressed...a plain brown coat and a fine silver laced blue waistcoat was a combination much favoured by the English gentry and prosperous merchant class.(See the portrait of John Wright by Heins on this website).

The sitter's pet dog is shown at his feet... dogs also symbolised trust and loyalty.

This portrait would have been painted by one of the many provincial portraitists working at the time. Self taught, untutored, they frequently created entrancing images of their sitters...rarely flattering, they have a powerful directness that makes them very appealing to the modern viewer.

SIZE: 55 x 45.5 inches inc. frame.

PROVENANCE: A Suffolk country house collection.

Verso: an old label for the famous art dealers The Parker Gallery, Albermarle Street, London.

Declaration

Roy Precious - Antiques & Fine Art has dated this 18th Century Oil Portrait to the 18th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 18th-century English School portraiture typically features formal poses, detailed contemporary costume, and naturalistic landscape backdrops, heavily influenced by continental European styles while recording British landed society.

These artworks were executed using hand-ground mineral pigments bound in drying oils, applied onto stretched hand-woven linen canvas, and encased in hand-carved, leaf-gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is determined by examining age-appropriate craquelure across the paint layer, timber stretcher construction, iron tacks, natural oxidation on gilding, and historical paint application techniques.

A gilt-framed oil portrait serves as an impactful focal point when positioned above a contemporary console table, creating an intentional contrast between historical fine art and clean modern design.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight, radiators, and changing humidity levels. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush and avoid applying liquid cleaners or damp cloths to the paint surface.
