A Fine Early 18th Century Portrait of a Gentleman in a Crimson Coat, Circle of Joseph Highmore (1692-1780)

18th century
Description

A fine early eighteenth-century portrait of a gentleman in a feigned oval. The sitter is wearing a crimson coat with gold embroidery, possibly a court coat, indicative of the high status of the sitter.

The portrait follows the sophisticated London tradition emerging in the years immediately following Sir Godfrey Kneller (who Highmore trained under) particularly in the modelling of the oval face, the handling of the eyes and the refined treatment of the lace cravat and shimmering fabrics. The richly worked costume, together with the commanding yet intimate pose, suggests a sitter of considerable social standing — possibly connected to court or politics during the reign of George I.

Highmore painted a number of knights in the 1720s following the creation of the Order of the Bath in 1725. The similarity of likeness of the sitter to a portrait in Abbot Hall said to be by Joseph Highmore of Sackville Tufton MP, 7th Earl of Thanet, cannot be overlooked.... Highmore also painted a portrait of the Duke of Cumberland for King George I.

Highmore was the son of a coal merchant and showed early interest in fine arts but his family sought to discourage him and placed him in the employ of a solicitor. Highmore would not be dissuaded and left to pursue a career in the arts, and went on to be a successful portrait painter.

Oil on canvas, housed in a carved wood and gesso gilt frame dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. Comparisons may be drawn with Highmore’s early portraits in the handling of facial structure, the elongated eye shape, and the subtle tonal transitions of flesh and drapery. As with portraits of the age there has been historic conservation and cleaning.

A striking and atmospheric early Georgian portrait.

This early Georgian oil portrait depicts a gentleman in a crimson coat with gold embroidery, a powdered wig, and a lace cravat, set in a feigned oval composition. The painting is housed in a heavily carved and moulded giltwood frame with scrollwork decoration, dating to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Historic conservation and cleaning are present on the canvas, showing the refined treatment of shimmering fabrics and tonal flesh transitions characteristic of the circle of Joseph Highmore. Appropriate for a gentleman's library or placement above a mantel in a traditional home, the artwork measures 94 cm x 83 cm including the frame, with the canvas itself measuring 76 cm x 64 cm. The sitter's commanding yet intimate pose reflects the sophisticated London portraiture tradition of the 1720s during the reign of George I.

During the 18th century, British portraiture flourished under the influence of master painters who depicted sitters in formal attire, often reflecting their social status and wealth through refined brushwork, classic poses, and detailed garments.

Artists typically used oil pigments mixed with natural drying oils painted directly onto hand-woven linen canvas, mounted on wooden stretchers and framed within hand-carved, gilded timber frames.

Authenticity is evaluated through age-appropriate craquelure patterns, evidence of hand-carved gilded framing, historical joinery on canvas stretchers, and pigment analysis consistent with early 18th-century painting techniques.

A period portrait serves as a striking focal point when positioned above a mantelpiece, console, or sideboard, juxtaposing historic grandeur against clean, contemporary architectural lines.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, dampness, and fluctuating humidity levels. Dust the frame lightly with a soft, dry brush and avoid applying liquid or chemical cleaners to the paint surface.
