Bronze Nostril from a Bronze Statue of a Horse

1920 - 1940
Description

An early 20thc bronze nostril from a bronze statue of a horse, mounted on a mahogany base.

This piece has a green patination, probably from it being outside.

Underneath this piece (also photographed) is the provenance from F/Lt J Jameson stating there was a bronze statue of Mussolini on horseback in Tripoli. The Royal Engineers needed some bronze & one night the statue was removed and then cut up and melted down. This nostril from the horse was acquired by F/Lt J Jameson in 1944 while he was stationed there.

Mussolini travelled to Libya in 1937.

This is a rare & important piece of Libyan history & quite interesting with the present problems in Libya.

Bronze sculpture fragments often originate from larger monumental statues or cast preliminary studies created by sculptors. Throughout history, particularly during the Grand Tour period, collectors acquired individual anatomical fragments as standalone decorative works and study pieces.

Most bronze fragments were created using the lost-wax casting technique (cire perdue), where molten alloy was poured into a refractory mould. Surface patination was subsequently applied or developed naturally through chemical oxidisation over time.

Authentic pieces display evidence of historical casting processes, such as hand-chased tool marks, internal core residues, and variable wall thickness. Natural patination shows irregular wear patterns and depth rather than a uniform sprayed chemical coating.
