Antique Oak Dresser with Plate Rack - Early 19th Century.

19th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

An early 19th-century, beautifully carved, oak dresser with a potboard base and plate rack. The plate rack features two deep drawers and a central double-door cupboard with brass H hinges and original lock. Below this, the dresser base has three frieze drawers, each with brass drop handles, lock escutcheons and a deep pot board base.

In very good antique condition with age-related wear and tear. We have noted the plate rack has been cut down in the past, probably to fit in a room with a low ceiling, but this does not detract from the overall look of this imposing kitchen dresser.

Date of Manufacture

M Cross Antiques has dated this Antique Oak Welsh Dresser to the 19th Century.

This early 19th-century English country oak dresser stands 203 cm high, 186 cm wide and 56 cm deep. The dark brown timber exhibits age-related wear and tear, including a plate rack cut down in the past to fit a room with a low ceiling. The imposing kitchen dresser comprises an upper open plate rack section with shelves, two deep drawers, and a central double-door cupboard secured with brass H hinges and a lock. Below sits the dresser base fitted with three frieze drawers featuring brass drop handles and lock escutcheons above a deep pot board base. The dark wood displays extensive decorative carving throughout, including carved rosettes, lunettes and intricate geometric patterns on the drawer fronts and cupboard doors, accented by small brass keyhole covers. This substantial storage piece suits a farmhouse kitchen, dining room or large living space for displaying tableware, serving platters and everyday utility items.

A Welsh dresser, or kitchen dresser, originated as a utility piece designed to store and display household crockery, featuring lower storage drawers or cupboards combined with open upper shelving.

Dressers from this period were predominantly crafted from regional hardwoods such as oak, elm, or pine, utilizing traditional joinery techniques like peg joints and hand-cut dovetails.

Authentic period dressers display uneven hand-planed backboards, hand-carved decorative motifs, natural wear around drawer runners, and aged brass or iron hardware with historical patination.

To integrate a heavy oak dresser into modern decor, contrast its dark tones against neutral wall colours and display simplified contemporary ceramics or monochrome glass on the open shelves.

Maintain antique oak by dusting with a dry lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year while keeping the item away from direct heat sources and moisture.
