This antique Soumak carpet originates from the Lesghi region of South Daghestan in the eastern Caucasus, dating from around 1900. Woven from wool using a traditional flat-weave soumak technique, the piece displays a distinct Caucasian style characterised by repeating geometric medallions, Lesghi stars, and prominent fringed ends. The palette centres on rich shades of red, magenta, and indigo blue, creating a vibrant pattern across the surface with minimal signs of minor wear and repair. The carpet measures 380 cm high by 220 cm wide. Suitable for placement on the floor in a living room, study, or bedroom, the rug provides a practical and decorative anchor for interior schemes with a Glastonbury Boho vibe. The dense wool construction and traditional geometric motifs add warmth and texture to interior spaces, functioning well with both modern and period furnishings. The natural red and blue tones complement diverse interior colour palettes, while the flat-weave construction ensures durability for daily use in domestic environments.

Soumak carpets are flat-woven tribal textiles originating from the Caucasus region, characterised by a supplementary weft-wrapping technique that leaves a smooth patterned face and unclipped yarn ends on the reverse.

Traditional Caucasian Soumak rugs are woven using natural hand-spun wool for both the structural warp and decorative weft threads, dyed using dyes derived from plants and minerals.

Authentic Daghestan Soumak rugs feature geometric medallions, Lesghi star patterns, flat-weave construction without pile, and loose yarn ends visible on the underside.

Designers position geometric Caucasian flatweaves over neutral wooden floors or stone flagstones to add visual texture, geometric pattern, and contrasting colour to modern or period spaces.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating beater bar, address spills immediately by blotting with clean cold water, and utilize a high-quality rug underlay to prevent slippage and fibre friction.
