244 X 346cm Antique Teftset Heriz Serapi Carpet

1920 - 1940
Description

There are good teftsets and bad teftsets, like with all things, and I find this one to be one of the rather better ones. The colours are ideal, rich and gorgeous, as is the superb quality wool used in the pile. It shines fantastically and it is in perfect condition, with full pile allover. Teftsets were made in Germany in the first half of the 20th century and faithfully copied all kinds of Middle Eastern rug designs. This is a great example of an original which would cost many, many thousands more so it's a great deal all round!

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Uniform machine-woven wool pile: industrial loom production of the early twentieth century.
Machine-bound side selvedges: factory finishing from the interwar era.
Attached end fringes: commercial construction found on twentieth-century European examples.
Stylised Serapi medallion: European commercial adaptation of traditional north-west Persian patterns.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This German teftset rug originates from the first half of the 20th century in 1930, displaying a Persian Heriz style design created with wool and cotton materials in a terracotta red colour scheme. The visual pattern consists of a geometric central medallion, angular spandrels, turtle motif borders, and stylized floral palmettes rendered in shades of navy blue, orange, cream, and red. The surface has a full pile throughout the entire piece, showing no signs of wear. Measuring 244 x 346 cm, this large area rug is suitable for placement on the floor in a living room, dining room, or study within an English country house interior setting to provide warmth and traditional decoration underfoot.

FAQs

Originating from Northwest Persia, Heriz and Serapi carpets are hand-knotted wool rugs renowned for their bold geometric medallions, angular stylized motifs, and durable construction.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, frequently incorporating natural plant-based dyes.

Authenticity is indicated by asymmetrical hand-knotted backing, subtle variations in dye tones known as abrash, natural age-related pile wear, and distinct geometric motifs rather than fluid curvilinear designs.

A large geometric Persian carpet grounds a living space by contrasting minimalist or contemporary furniture with rich historical patterns and warm terracotta tones.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush bar, rotate annually to distribute foot traffic evenly, and employ professional specialist rug cleaning services when required.
