This fine antique area rug originates from Northern India around 1900 and exhibits a traditional Oriental style. Constructed with wool and cotton, the piece displays a rich deep red and navy blue colour scheme with pale gold accents, finished with white fringed ends. The rectangular textile features a navy blue field filled with geometric central medallions, serrated diamonds, and stylised tree motifs, enclosed within a multi-banded deep crimson red border containing repeating geometric patterns. Measuring 121 cm by 190 cm, the rug has a full pile in original condition with visible hand-knotted texture. The piece suits placement on timber or stone flooring in a study, library, or hallway, adding traditional pattern and warmth to interior spaces.

Agra rugs originate from the historic weaving centres of Agra, India, a tradition that flourished under Mughal rule in the 16th century. Historically influenced by Persian carpet designs, weavers adapted these motifs into distinct geometric and floral patterns featuring rich vegetable dyes.

Traditional Agra carpets are hand-knotted using natural hand-spun wool pile constructed onto a cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. The wool is historically dyed using plant-based and mineral pigments to achieve deep red, navy, and earth tones.

An authentic hand-knotted rug shows slight variations in pattern alignment and color shading, known as abrash. Inspecting the underside reveals individual knots visible on the back that mirror the front design, along with hand-bound selvages and integrated end fringes.

Interior designers use deep red antique rugs to ground minimalist or contemporary rooms, providing warmth and historic contrast against polished concrete or light oak floorboards. The rich colours complement dark wood furniture, leather upholstery, or neutral linen seating.

Preserve wool rugs by vacuuming regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar. Rotate the carpet annually to distribute foot traffic evenly, use a quality rug pad underneath to reduce fiber friction, and spot clean spills immediately with mild water and natural soap.
