Old cursive ink inscription on the backboard: nineteenth-century penmanship.
Toned wooden backing panel with chalk lot numbers: long history of handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This mid-19th-century Victorian watercolour portrait depicts the Reverend John Neale of Bristol, executed in fine detail against a grey background. The sitter wears a dark coat, white clerical bands, and a powdered wig, rendered in black, gold, and grey tones. The artwork is housed under glass within an ebonised wooden frame featuring a stepped profile and a gilt inner slip, finished with a small metal hanging ring at the top edge. The painted surface displays a small crease to the left of the sitter's face, while the frame shows light signs of wear commensurate with its age. Measuring 24 cm high and 21 cm wide, this compact painting suits a narrow wall space in a gentleman's library or study. It hangs effectively alongside traditional furnishings or within a curated gallery wall in a living room, hallway, or home office.

FAQs

Portrait miniatures are small, highly detailed scale paintings that originated in Europe during the 16th century and remained popular through the mid-19th century.

Miniatures were typically executed using watercolour or gouache on vellum, card, or ivory, framed within ebonised wood or gilded brass mounts.

Authentic 19th-century portrait miniatures feature fine hand-painted brushwork under glass, contemporary period framing, and natural age-related characteristics such as minor surface patination or frame wear.

Small framed portraits can be displayed as part of a gallery wall arrangement, hung in narrow alcoves, or placed on a bookshelf alongside contemporary ceramics and books.

Watercolours must be displayed away from direct light and excessive humidity to prevent pigment fading, paper degradation, and mould growth.
