This Neoclassical Revival fireplace fender originates from around 1900, created in the grand Regency style using gilt bronze or ormolu with a brilliant gold finish. The elaborate construction displays a central two-handled urn with ram heads topped by a finial, flanked by female winged sphinxes and perched swans at each end. Detailed cast decoration includes scrolling acanthus foliage, flowers, and husks of wheat extending across the length. Signs of age appear as rubbing to the gilding. Measuring 48 cm high and 196 cm wide, the large proportions make it a substantial furnishing. Positioned on a fireplace hearth, this accessory provides an ornate decorative boundary for a mantel setup in a living room, drawing room, or grand study. The sculptural metalwork brings classical motifs into a domestic interior, framing the hearth with symmetrical classical figures, birds, and botanical scrollwork. The heavy cast metal construction sits directly on the floor, anchoring the fireplace elevation with traditional decorative metalcraft.

A fireplace fender is a low rail or border positioned around a fireplace hearth to contain embers, with dore bronze referring to mercury-gilded bronze casting technique popularised in late 18th and 19th-century metalwork.

High-end fenders from this period were cast in solid bronze or brass, finished with fire gilding or chemical patination, and assembled with threaded iron rods and hand-cut nuts.

Authentic period examples feature hand-chased surface details, substantial weight from solid cast metal, threaded assembly construction beneath, and natural rubbing to the gilded layer around high-contact areas.

Position the fender directly on the hearth surface in front of an open chimney breast or decorative fire surround to frame the hearth area in formal living spaces.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, keeping the surface free from moisture and avoiding abrasive metal cleaners that can damage historic gilding.
