This nineteenth-century William IV sofa takes a form defined by a square back and warm brown rosewood framing. The structure incorporates scrolled arms detailed with carved rosettes and turned legs fitted with brass castors. A patterned floral fabric in beige tones covers the seat and backrest, showing a clean appearance with visible signs of prior use. The dimensions measure 92 cm high, 213 cm wide, and 80 cm deep. Placement in a home today suits a traditional living room, drawing room, or reception hall, providing comfortable seating while maintaining a classic English country house aesthetic. The exposed timber grain and detailed turning provide visual interest from multiple angles, allowing the piece to sit independently against a wall or within an open floor plan. Buyers can keep the existing textile covering or replace it with custom material to match existing interior schemes.

FAQs

William IV furniture dates from 1830 to 1837 and represents a transitional bridge between classical Regency proportions and heavier Victorian ornamentation. Pieces from this era typically exhibit substantial timber framing, bold turnings, carved rosettes, scrollwork, and rich woods like rosewood and mahogany.

Sofas from this period were predominantly constructed with solid or veneered rosewood and mahogany frames over oak or pine substructures. Internal upholstery utilized traditional horsehair stuffing, steel coil springs, and jute webbing, complemented by cast brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature characteristic architectural turnings, carved flower rosettes on the arm facings, and original brass castors fitted to turned legs. Examination of the underside reveals hand-planed secondary timbers, traditional joinery techniques, and genuine rosewood grain structure.

Position the sofa against neutral or deep-toned walls to highlight the rich timber grain and carved silhouette. Contrast the pattern of the upholstery with minimal contemporary lighting, stone coffee tables, or plain wool floor coverings to create balance.

Clean timber surfaces using a soft cloth and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly along the grain to preserve the wood finish. Keep the sofa away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, and vacuum the upholstery gently with a soft brush attachment.
