Dating from the Victorian period around 1880, this English Country House coal bin functions as a traditional fireside container for the hearth. The body is formed from warm copper with brass hardware, comprising an oval shape standing upon four brass bun feet, with drop side handles mounted through lion's head mounts. A fitted, shaped removable lid sits on top, finished with a brass urn finial. An embossed brass floral border runs around the upper section of the bin beneath the rim, while the main copper body displays surface scuffs and marks consistent with age and use. Practical for everyday home placement next to a fireplace hearth, this lidded container measures 38 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 35 cm deep. The combination of polished metal highlights against the patinated copper surface provides functional storage for solid fuel while serving as decorative metalware within a living space or study.

During the nineteenth century, coal was the primary heating fuel for domestic hearths across Britain. Lidded coal bins, often called purdoniums, were designed to keep fuel tidy and contained within living rooms, evolving from utilitarian metal buckets into decorative parlour furnishings.

Victorian hearthware was predominantly constructed from sheet copper, brass, cast iron, and sheet steel. High-grade examples frequently combined polished copper bodies with cast brass handles, feet, and decorative bandings.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit signs of hand-hammering, dovetailed or riveted joints, and natural patination along seam lines. Heavier gauge metalwork and hand-cast brass mountings are common indicators of period craftsmanship.

A lidded copper bin serves as ideal fireside storage for modern logs, kindling, or firelighters beside a wood-burning stove. Outside the living room, these vessels are frequently repurposed as decorative floor planters or entryway storage containers.

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. To preserve the original aged patina, avoid abrasive chemical cleansers, or polish sparingly with specialized metal cream if a bright finish is preferred.
