An eighteenth-century George III Hepplewhite mahogany sofa brings classic English country house style to a living room or drawing room. This piece combines a shaped serpentine upholstered back with elegantly swept arms and a deep, comfortable seat. The dark brown exposed mahogany frame displays fine foliate carving, fluted tapering front legs with carved rosettes on the leg blocks, and brass castors. Recent cream striped linen upholstery covers the back, seat and arms. Measuring 175 cm wide, 93 cm high and 84 cm deep, the sofa offers generous proportions for daily seating. Placement in a traditional or period interior provides both a decorative focal point and a functional seating option for hosting guests or relaxing at home.

Emerging in late 18th-century England, Hepplewhite sofas are characterised by delicate Neoclassical proportions, elegant curves such as camel or serpentine backs, and refined mahogany frames often featuring fluted legs.

Craftsmen utilised dense mahogany for exposed frames and legs, combined with hand-carved details, beech or pine internal frames, traditional horsehair stuffing, and brass castors.

Look for original joinery techniques such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, natural patination on mahogany legs, authentic hand-carved rosettes or fluting, and correct historical proportions.

Pair the structured silhouette with neutral linen upholstery or contemporary textured fabrics to create a focal point in a formal drawing room or modern sitting area.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a soft cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly along the wood grain, and vacuum upholstered surfaces using a soft brush attachment.
