Kazak Rug

19th century
Description

A high quality crisply drawn Kazak rug with a bold look. Good rugs are about quality and variety of colours as well as good design, this example has it all with a brilliant indigo ground plus soft green, red, yellow and aubergine dyes beautifully combined to create a stunning vision. The leaf and calyx border is well articulated and the inner border with its green ground is delightful too. I think sometimes borders are under appreciated but they can really improve a rugs appearance by creating contrast and framing the central field properly. The two meandering S borders picked out in and red and ivory do this here. The five hooked diamonds almost join into a column and seem to float on the blue field which is quite sparsely decorated. Note the little person at the top, I wonder if this is a self portrait or just a fun addition, I like to believe that the weaver actually looked like that. This is a rug with a couple of issues which does reduce its worth but it does make it more affordable too.

Fair condition, a little wear to the field. The main issue is the two tension creases that have been resolved by removing the raised section and sewing the rug back together. this has been executed well and makes little difference to the overall look.

Date of Manufacture

Phil Bell Antique Rugs has dated this Antique Kazak Wool Runner to the 1880s.

This hand-knotted antique Kazak wool runner dates from 1880 in a Caucasian Tribal style. The textile displays a deep indigo blue field with five stepped geometric diamond medallions, accompanied by soft green, red, yellow and aubergine dyes, tribal hook motifs, star medallions, and a little person figure near the top. Multiple geometric border bands frame the central field, finished with fringed ends along the top and bottom edges. The pile shows fair condition with a little wear to the field and two resolved tension creases. Measuring 244 cm high by 130 cm wide, this runner is well-suited as a floor covering in a hallway, corridor, or living space within a home today.

Kazak rugs originate from the Caucasus region and are characterized by their hand-knotted wool construction, geometric tribal motifs, and bold primary colours. Historically crafted by village weavers, these rugs feature large-scale graphic designs such as stepped medallions, latch-hooks, and stylized stars.

Authentic Kazak rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced sheeps wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundations. The yarn was traditionally dyed using natural vegetable, mineral, and insect dyes, producing deep indigo blues, madder reds, ivory, and forest greens.

Authentic antique Caucasian rugs display hand-tied symmetrical knots visible on the underside, slight asymmetrical variations in pattern, and subtle colour shifts known as abrash. The natural wool foundation gives the rug a flexible, soft hand feel compared to machine-made synthetic alternatives.

An antique Kazak runner works exceptionally well in long entryways, corridors, or placed alongside a bed to add warm colour and geometric structure. Interior designers often contrast its vibrant tribal patterns against neutral hardwood floors, contemporary furniture, or classic dark timber joinery.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating beater bar to prevent fiber pulling. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean, dry cloth, and schedule professional hand-washing with specialized wool rug cleaners every few years to preserve the natural fibres.
