This Victorian Classical Revival urn is formed from cast iron with a charcoal body and parcel-gilt highlights. The covered piece stands on a square base with a fluted pedestal and a gadrooned moulding at the foot. A detachable lid sits on top, finished with a gadrooned rim and a small turned finial. Two scroll handles project from the sides, detailed with carved acanthus leaf motifs, and a matching relief decoration wraps around the upper body of the vessel. The visible cast texture shows a dark grey and metallic gold palette throughout. Measuring 23 cm in height by 20 cm in width and 11 cm in depth, the compact object fits easily on a mantelpiece, sideboard or display shelf to accent a traditional or gothic interior space.

Victorian cast iron urns were manufactured primarily during the nineteenth century, drawing heavy influence from Classical Greco-Roman motifs. They frequently feature gadrooned bodies, acanthus leaf handles, fluted pedestals, and decorative lid finials, serving as both garden features and interior decorative elements.

These urns were constructed using sand-casting methods, where molten iron was poured into sand moulds patterned from original wax or wooden models. Components such as lids, handles, and bases were often cast separately, fitted together, and finished with paint or parcel-gilding.

Authentic period cast iron urns display substantial weight, visible casting seams, and crisp relief detail. Signs of natural age include underlying surface oxidisation, minor casting imperfections consistent with nineteenth-century foundry techniques, and original multi-layered painted or gilded finishes.

A cast iron urn functions as an architectural focal point in modern interiors. Placing it on a wooden sideboard, mantelpiece, or entry console adds textural contrast and historical weight to minimalist or traditional room schemes.

Dust the urn regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, damp cloths, and chemical cleaners, which can cause rusting of the underlying iron or stripping of fragile parcel-gilded details.
