This Art Nouveau gilt bronze sculpture by Leo LaPorte-Blairsy depicts a woman in flowing drapery and a heavy fringed shawl looking upward, mounted on an integrated square base. The piece dates from 1910 and has a gold finish with minor rubbing to the gilding commensurate with age, showing an up-swept hair arrangement with floral details and soft naturalistic facial contours. Measuring 21 cm in height, the sculpture makes a decorative display piece suited for placement on a mantelpiece in a living room, study or hallway. Its slender proportions and reflective metallic surface complement both traditional period interiors and modern spaces alike.

FAQs

Art Nouveau sculptures, popular from the 1890s to 1910, feature organic forms, sinuous drapery, and stylised naturalistic figures. French sculptors during this period frequently depicted female figures enveloped in flowing garments that seamlessly merged form with decoration.

These sculptures were typically cast using the lost-wax process or sand casting before applying a gilded surface finish or chemical patination. The technique allowed sculptors to achieve detailed textures in flowing fabric and hair before final polishing.

Authentic pieces generally display precise casting details, foundry marks, or sculptor signatures incised directly into the bronze base. Genuine antique gilding shows subtle wear patterns on raised areas and natural patination within crevices, rather than uniform modern paint.

Positioning the sculpture on a mantelpiece, console, or bookshelf allows its detailed drapery and metallic finish to catch light. Pairing gilded bronze with dark wood surfaces or minimalist backdrops highlights the sculptural silhouette.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry natural-bristle brush or microfibre cloth to prevent dust accumulation in detailed drapes. Avoid chemical cleaners, harsh polishes, or water, which can strip original gilding or alter historical patination.
