Antique Chinese Bronze Tripod Censer & Cover Qilin Finial Late Qing C.1880-1920

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Chinese Patinated Bronze Tripod Censer & Cover with Qilin Finial – Late Qing / Early Republic Period

An attractive antique Chinese bronze incense burner or censer, dating from the late Qing dynasty to early Republic period, circa 1880–1920.

The censer is of archaistic tripod form, standing on three spreading feet and flanked by a pair of unusually tall pierced upright handles. The compressed circular body is decorated around the upper and lower registers with repeating geometric key-fret / archaistic ornament inspired by the decorative vocabulary of early Chinese ritual bronzes.

The removable cover is particularly striking, constructed with pierced openwork registers through which incense smoke could escape. It is surmounted by a wonderfully characterful cast Chinese mythical beast, probably representing a qilin (kylin), modelled with an open mouth, pronounced facial features, raised foreleg, curled tail and finely incised detailing.

The piece retains an attractive dark brown aged patina, with areas of natural surface variation, wear and green copper oxidation/verdigris particularly visible to the interior and underside of the cover. The underside of the vessel is unmarked.

The interior shows considerable age-related surface deposits, oxidation and wear consistent with an old bronze incense vessel. The feet similarly display wear to their contact surfaces, revealing the warmer copper-alloy colour beneath the darker patination.

Chinese bronze censers of this type draw upon China’s much earlier tradition of ritual bronze vessels, with archaistic forms and decoration remaining popular during the Qing dynasty and into the early Republican period.

Date: Late Qing dynasty / early Republic period, circa 1880–1920

Origin: China

Material: Patinated bronze / copper alloy

Height: approximately 18cm

Weight: approximately 641g

Base: Unmarked

Finial: Qilin / Chinese auspicious mythical beast

Condition: Good antique condition overall with expected surface wear, scratches, oxidation, patination and areas of verdigris commensurate with age. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. The piece has deliberately not been polished, preserving its aged surface and patina.

An unusual and highly decorative example of late Qing/early Republican Chinese metalwork, particularly appealing for its dramatic tall handles, archaistic decoration and sculptural mythical-beast finial.

REDUCED: Was £255, now £204. Save £51.

This Chinese bronze tripod censer and cover dates from the late Qing dynasty to early Republic period, circa 1880 to 1920, and belongs to the Qing Dynasty style. The dark bronze object is constructed from patinated bronze and a copper alloy, displaying an attractive dark brown aged patina with natural surface variation, wear, and green copper oxidation. The archaistic tripod form stands on three spreading feet and features a pair of unusually tall pierced upright handles, a compressed circular body decorated with repeating geometric key-fret patterns, and a removable cover with pierced openwork registers. The cover is surmounted by a cast qilin finial modelled with an open mouth, a raised foreleg, and a curled tail. The height measures approximately 18 cm. In a home today, this piece is well suited for placement on a mantelpiece within a gentleman's library.

Tripod censers, historically developed from ancient Chinese ritual ding vessels, were crafted to burn incense during religious ceremonies, ancestral worship, and scholarly pursuits. By the Qing Dynasty, these metalwork vessels served both functional and decorative purposes within ceremonial spaces and private studies.

These vessels were primarily cast from copper alloys and bronze using lost-wax or piece-mould casting techniques. Craftsmen applied hand-finished details, openwork carving on handles or lids, and chemical treatments to create deep, dark patinated surfaces.

Authentic period censers display natural wear, consistent patination, and evidence of hand-finishing along casting seams and decorative motifs. Weight is another indicator, as genuine bronze pieces possess substantial heft compared to modern electroplated reproductions.

A bronze censer functions as a focal accent on a library bookshelf, console table, or mantelpiece. Pairing the dark patinated metal against neutral stone or timber surfaces highlights its sculpted silhouette and decorative handles.

Dust the vessel regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush to clean intricate areas. Avoid applying chemical polishes, abrasive cleaners, or water, as these can strip the original patination and accelerate unwanted oxidisation.
