This nineteenth-century French Empire style settee, also known as a love seat, provides seating for a drawing room or bedroom. The piece uses ebonised wood with parcel gilt carved details, alongside brass castors on its fluted legs. The oval medallion back holds silk upholstery patterned with purple and pink flowers, accented by padded armrests in a matching cream quilted material with silver thread gridwork. Measuring 88 cm high, 97 cm wide, and 58 cm deep, with a seat height of 38 cm, the settee fits well against a living room wall or at the foot of a bed. The solid frame shows wear consistent with its age.

During the mid-to-late 19th century in France, cabinetmakers frequently combined dark ebonised timber with giltwood highlights, drawing inspiration from neoclassical Louis XVI forms. Features include oval backrests, fluted legs, leaf mouldings, and contrasting black and gold finishes.

The frames were crafted from hard woods such as beech or walnut, which were painted black or ebonised and selectively highlighted with gold leaf (parcel gilt). Upholstery typically featured woven silks, satins, or damasks over horsehair padding.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-carved details, traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, original brass castors, and natural age wear to the gilding, revealing the underlying red or yellow bole clay ground.

Position the piece as a focal point against neutral walls to highlight the dark frame and gilding. Combine it with clean-lined contemporary tables or subtle textiles to balance the formal neoclassical design.

Dust the timber frame using a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or water on gold leaf areas. Keep the upholstery away from direct sunlight to prevent silk fading, and vacuum delicate fabrics gently on low suction.
