Description

Antique early 20th century oval writing desk in mahogany, a handsome piece of excellent quality in the Chippendale manner, showcasing fine craftsmanship and graceful curved lines.

The mahogany displays a lovely striped figure and a warm, rich colour, with a pleasing patina that sets off the red leather beautifully.

This early 20th century antique writing desk follows the Chippendale style, formed in dark reddish-brown mahogany with brass hardware and a red leather top. The oval design incorporates a central frieze drawer with a keyhole above a kneehole, flanked by deep pedestal drawers fitted with drop handles and heart-shaped ring handles on the curved ends. Carved scrolling elements frame the kneehole, while the top has a gadrooned border and a crossbanded edge. Four cabriole legs support the structure, detailed with carved acanthus and anthemion knees that terminate in bold ball-and-claw feet. The timber exhibits a striped figure and a warm patina, complemented by gilt tooling on the leather surface. Measuring 73.5 cm high, 123 cm wide and 62 cm deep, the piece offers a practical workspace. Suitable for a study, a gentleman's library or a home office, the desk functions as a writing table or workstation. The construction accommodates seated use at the central kneehole, while the side pedestals provide enclosed storage for stationery and documents. Placed centrally in a room or against a wall, the piece brings period character and traditional craftsmanship into domestic interiors.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century England, Chippendale style furniture is defined by dark woods like mahogany, elegant curves, cabriole legs, ball-and-claw feet, and intricate hand-carved detailing inspired by Gothic, Rococo, and Chinese motifs.

Traditional antique writing desks are predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with inset leather writing surfaces, brass hardware, and hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic period pieces show signs of hand craftsmanship, including irregular dovetail joints, tool marks on unexposed wood, original cast brass fittings, and natural wear patterns on feet and writing surfaces.

Integrate an antique desk into a contemporary room by pairing it with a streamlined modern task chair, neutral wall tones, and subtle brass lighting to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern functionality.

Maintain mahogany timber by applying natural beeswax sparingly along the grain, while leather inset tops should be wiped clean with a dry cloth and conditioned periodically to prevent drying out and cracking.
