1920 - 1940
Description

A fine Japanese okimono of a salmon, Shuho Nakahara, Hokkaido, c. 1935, Showa Period. Carved in the Senpyo-bori style, the salmon is a finely rendered study, with naturalistic colouring to accentuate the detail.

Signed Shuho Nakahara to the reverse.

Length – 56 cm, 22”.

Shuho Nakahara 1909-1995, was a master craftsman in the Senpyo-bori style of carving, centered in Kuriyama Town, Hokkaido. The style concentrates on anatomical precision, with Kazuya Honda being the founder of the school.

Nakahara was apprenticed to the master, and became a renowned exponent of the style. He was respected for the precise detail, of his work, especially of salmon, where the exact number of scales can be seen. Collectors and academics are particularly impressed by his ability to capture the look of captured, and desiccated fish, as can be seen in the rendering of the facial expression.

Examples of his work are regarded as cultural relics of Hokkaido.

This Japanese Showa Period okimono sculpture depicts a salmon from the period around 1935, originating from Hokkaido. The piece is formed from carved wood with pigment finishes in muted grey and brown tones, featuring a naturalistic colour palette to accentuate the detailed work. Hand-carved in the Senpyo-bori style, the sculpture exhibits carved scales, textured fins, an open mouth, and realistic eyes, along with a signature to the reverse. The work measures 56 cm in length. In a contemporary home, the piece functions as a decorative sculpture suited for placement on a mantelpiece. The carving represents anatomical precision, capturing the appearance of a caught fish through the rendered facial expression and precise scale detail. The object aligns with a Highland Hunting Lodge design aesthetic and serves as a focal point within a room display.

An okimono is a decorative display object traditional to Japan, carved from materials such as wood, ivory, or bronze, designed specifically for display in alcoves or home interiors.

Artisans typically utilised native woods such as boxwood, cypress, or paulownia, carved meticulously with specialised chisels and finished with natural pigments or lacquers.

Authentic pieces feature precise hand-carving details, artist signatures carved into the base or body, age-appropriate surface wear, and accurate anatomical proportions.

Place the sculpture on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or bookshelf to add organic texture and sculptural interest within contemporary or traditional schemes.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid exposure to direct sunlight and heating elements, and apply a thin coat of natural wax paste periodically.
