André Minaux was a French painter, draughtsman, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor associated with the École de Paris and the post-war Jeune Peinture movement. Born in Paris, he studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs under Maurice Brianchon and Roland Oudot before emerging as one of the notable young figurative painters of post-war France.

In 1949 Minaux exhibited with the figurative group L’Homme Témoin, alongside artists including Bernard Buffet and Paul Rebeyrolle, and in the same year was awarded the prestigious Prix de la Critique. The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris acquired one of his paintings in 1950, and he participated in the Venice Biennale in 1952. His reputation soon became international, with exhibitions in London and subsequently throughout Europe, North America and Japan.

Minaux initially worked in a powerful figurative style characterised by strong draughtsmanship, dark contours and earthy colours, painting landscapes, still lifes and scenes of everyday life. From the 1960s his work became progressively more stylised, with simplified forms and stronger areas of colour eventually leading towards abstraction.

Minaux died at Touquin in 1986. His work is represented in French and international museum collections, and he remains recognised for the distinctive combination of powerful drawing, simplified form and expressive colour that runs throughout his varied career.

An original 1963 oil on canvas by the important French modernist painter André Minaux.
The composition is characteristically robust. Heavy black outlines and broad passages of paint give the boats considerable physical presence, while Minaux’s deliberately restrained palette creates a quieter atmosphere. Areas of chalky white and grey are punctuated by earthy reds, ochres and greens, bringing warmth and rhythm to an otherwise subdued coastal scene. The visible texture of the oil paint contributes further to the work’s tactile quality.

Rather than approaching the subject as a conventional maritime view, Minaux concentrates upon form, structure and the relationships between the boats themselves. Masts, hulls and sweeping curves create a series of intersecting verticals, diagonals and horizontal bands, giving the composition an almost abstract underlying geometry. Yet the subject remains immediately legible: working boats temporarily stranded by the retreating tide.

Painted in 1963, the strong draughtsmanship, simplified forms, expressive handling of paint and sombre but carefully balanced palette are all characteristic of his post-war French modernist style.
