Artsonline has dated this Antique Biblical Oil Painting to the 1930s.
Brief Description:
This is a magnificent, large original early 20th-century Oil on Canvas Painting depicting the famous biblical confrontation between David and Goliath, after the work of German artist Siegfried Detlev Bendixen (1786–1864).
The impressive composition is dominated by the towering figure of Goliath, the mighty Philistine warrior, who stands dressed in magnificent ceremonial battle armour, complete with an elaborately decorated helmet, richly gilded breastplate, enormous circular shield, spear and sword.
In the middle distance stands the young shepherd David, dressed in a simple tunic and holding his humble sling, fearlessly confronting the heavily armed giant.
Beyond the two principal figures stretches an expansive landscape of rolling green hills, distant mountains and a winding river, with numerous soldiers assembled in formation across the opposing banks.
The painting follows a 19th-century composition by Siegfried Detlev Bendixen (1786–1864), the accomplished German painter and printmaker whose works included historical, religious and figurative subjects.
It is mounted within a substantial, attractive gilt-toned wooden frame, with a deep moulded profile and beautifully aged finish, which complements the historical character of the artwork.
