Vintage Georgian Style Mahogany Chest of Drawers | Brushing Slide

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Vintage 20th century Georgian style chest of drawers in mahogany, a slender and elegant piece of good quality, made in the manner of an 18th century tall chest and showcasing fine craftsmanship.

The chest is fitted with two short drawers over five long graduated drawers, with a pull-out brushing slide set between them. The slide is inset with a green tooled leather surface with gilt decoration, ideal as a writing or dressing surface. The drawers are finished with Chippendale style brass swan-neck handles on pierced backplates.

The drawer fronts and top are veneered in flame mahogany with crossbanding and fine boxwood stringing, set above a moulded top edge. It stands on a moulded base with shaped bracket feet.

The mahogany displays a stunning flame figure to the top and drawer fronts with a warm, rich colour, contrasting with the straight-grained sides.

Presented in good condition, a very desirable narrow chest of drawers with plenty of storage in a small footprint, perfect for a bedroom, hallway or apartment.

This vintage 1920 Georgian style chest of drawers is constructed from mahogany with a dark brown finish. The tall, slender piece measures 113.5 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, incorporating two short drawers positioned above five long graduated drawers, alongside a pull-out brushing slide set between the upper and lower sections. The drawer fronts and top display flame mahogany veneers with crossbanding and boxwood stringing, complemented by brass swan-neck handles on pierced backplates. A moulded top edge sits above the upper drawers, while the base rests upon shaped bracket feet. Suitable for use in a bedroom, hallway, or apartment, this narrow storage unit provides multiple drawers in a compact footprint. The traditional proportions and classic timber detailing suit English Country House interiors, offering practical storage alongside a writing or dressing surface via the slide. The piece functions effectively in smaller spaces while maintaining traditional period styling.

FAQs

Georgian style furniture, originating from 1714 to 1830 in Great Britain, is characterised by balanced proportions, symmetry, and the widespread use of mahogany. Features often include brass hardware, bracket feet, and functional elements such as pull-out brushing slides.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary woods such as pine or oak. Construction features hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, cockbeading along drawer edges, and cast brass handles.

Authentic 18th-century pieces exhibit signs of manual craftsmanship, including irregular saw marks, hand-cut dovetail joints, original iron screws, and natural timber shrinkage over time. Reproduction pieces from the 20th century often display uniform machine-cut joints and modern fittings.

A tall mahogany chest provides vertical storage in bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces without consuming extensive floor space. Pairing dark timber with neutral walls or contemporary artwork creates visual contrast between historical form and modern aesthetics.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft lint-free cloth and apply beeswax periodically to nourish the wood finish. Avoid placing timber near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent drying, warping, and fading.
