Antique Georgian Style Mahogany Grill Front Sideboard

1920 - 1940
Description

An impressive and very well made antique Georgian style mahogany grill front sideboard. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1930’s.

It is of very good quality, this is beautifully designed and is a very useful piece of furniture. This is a useful size, quite small and compact, yet with lots of storage space inside. There are adjustable shelves in the cabinets, with a felt lined cutlery divider in the upper middle drawer. The top, drawer fronts and side doors are inlaid and cross banded, the middle door has a beautiful bass grill front over the original red fabric.

We have recently had this cleaned and revived, the condition is excellent for its age with just some extremely minor wear here and there.

An antique Georgian revival sideboard made in England around 1930 from rich brown mahogany. The piece measures 82 cm high, 108 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. The design incorporates boxwood stringing, cross-banding on the top, drawer fronts, and side doors, fluted pilasters flanking the central compartment, and traditional bracket feet. Hardware includes circular brass pull handles on the three upper drawers and ornate brass capitals above the central cabinet door. The central door is fitted with a brass lattice grille backed by original red fabric with a diamond pattern. The structure includes two side cupboards with panelled doors and three top drawers. Inside, adjustable shelving and a felt-lined cutlery divider in the upper middle drawer provide storage. The cleaned and revived timber surface shows minor wear consistent with its age, maintaining a polished appearance. The compact dimensions make this sideboard suitable for use as a serving console, a dining room storage cabinet, or a decorative display unit in living spaces and hallways.

Georgian style sideboards are characterised by symmetrical proportions, classic cabinetmaking techniques, and the extensive use of timbers such as mahogany. Common decorative elements include line inlay, brass grilles, fluted columns, and carved bracket feet.

Pieces from this era traditionally feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine or oak frameworks. Accents often incorporate boxwood stringing, brass ring-pull handles, woven brass grilles, and fabric linings.

Examine the drawer construction for hand-cut dovetail joints, inspect the underside and rear for historic timber saw marks, and check for natural patination around original brass hardware and keyholes.

Balance dark wood tones by placing the piece against neutral, light-toned walls or alongside modern artwork. Incorporating contemporary table lamps or ceramic accessories creates an effective visual contrast between historic and modern elements.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and finish fading.
