19th century
For Sale by Spinka & Co
Description

K0676 A fine and elegant Regency / George IV period rosewood inverted breakfront cabinet bookcase. This versatile piece, perfectly suited for use as a library bookcase, credenza, or sideboard, features a well-figured rosewood top elegantly crowned with an arched three-quarter brass gallery along the edge. The oversailing top sits above a central cupboard door fitted with a decorative brass crisscross lattice grille and a newly relined black moiré fabric panel, flanked by two glazed cabinet doors, all opening to reveal height-adjustable shelves.

All three doors are fitted with working locks and are accompanied by three keys. The entire cabinet is raised on a substantial moulded plinth base that anchors its refined architectural proportions.

Displaying a mellow colour and a soft patina, the piece retains its original French polish finish and shows some age related signs of use that only enhance its authentic historic character. This antique cabinet is in home ready condition. c1830

This George IV rosewood inverted breakfront cabinet bookcase is from the nineteenth century. The dark brown timber displays a mellow colour and a soft patina beneath an original French polish finish, showing age-related signs of use. The oversailing top features an arched three-quarter brass gallery rail along the edge and sits above three doors. The central cupboard door holds a decorative brass crisscross wire grille over a black moiré fabric panel, flanked by two glazed cabinet doors with red hanging tassels. All three doors open on working locks with keys to reveal height-adjustable shelves holding rows of books with coloured spines. The entire structure rests on a substantial moulded plinth base. Measuring 94 cm high, 138.5 cm wide, and 45.5 cm deep, this piece provides generous storage space. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library or study, the cabinet accommodates a collection of books and display items on its shelves while offering surface space on top. The low profile allows it to function effectively as a credenza or sideboard in a traditional living room, dining room, or hallway. The warm tones of the rosewood complement various interior styles, while the glazed and grilled doors keep contents visible yet protected. Placed against a wall, it serves as a practical storage unit that combines architectural presence with period character.

Produced during the reign of King George IV (18201830), these pieces bridge late Regency and early Victorian styles, characterised by dark timbers like rosewood, classical proportions, and understated architectural moulding.

Cabinetmakers favoured Brazilian rosewood veneers for their grain structure, paired with solid oak or pine carcases, brass wire mesh, glazed panels, and metal hardware.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass mesh or glass panels, natural wood oxidisation on timber interiors, and period-correct brass escutcheons.

Position the piece as a low sideboard or console, styling the flat top with contemporary ceramics, lighting, or artwork to balance the dark timber tones.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading, and apply a beeswax polish annually using a soft microfibre cloth.
