This late nineteenth-century British study takes the form of a cast bronze ram's head. The piece dates from 1880 and adopts a naturalistic nineteenth-century sculptural style rendered in dark metallic bronze with a rich, consistent colour and patina. Detailed workmanship includes deeply grooved curling horns, textured fleece work across the neck and snout, a clearly defined ear behind the horn, and an attentive eye. An integrally cast wall-hanging fitting is mounted on the reverse. The work measures 22 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 15 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, the piece mounts securely to a wall in a study, library, hallway, or living space as a decorative wall accessory.

The animalier movement originated in France during the 19th century, focussing on the detailed and realistic depiction of animals in bronze. Artists captured naturalistic anatomy and texture, elevating animal studies into recognized decorative objects across Europe.

Victorian and 19th-century bronze sculptures were typically produced using the lost-wax or sand casting method. The molten bronze alloy was poured into detailed moulds, after which hand-chasing and chemical patination were applied to create rich tones and textured surfaces.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-chased surface details, age-appropriate wear to the patination, and cast seams that have been carefully hand-finished. They often feature notable visual weight and may bear founder marks or signatures stamped directly into the cast metal.

A bronze study serves as a strong visual accent when displayed on a dark wood mantelpiece, a structured bookshelf, or a console table alongside textured books and stone objects. It bridges traditional metalwork craftsmanship with contemporary eclecticism.

Preserve bronze by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleansers. Applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax once or twice a year protects the original patination from oxidisation and moisture.
