Artsonline has dated this Japanese Sumida Gawa Jug to the 1910s.
Brief Description:
This superbly characterful piece is attributed to the celebrated Inoue Ryosai family of Japanese potters, renowned for their distinctive sculptural pottery and richly coloured flowing glazes.
The fascinating jug is beautifully modelled in the form of a standing elderly Japanese sage or Buddhist Rakan, with wonderfully expressive facial features, prominent white eyebrows, clasped hands and long, flowing robes.
The figure is decorated in a striking combination of deep terracotta red, emerald green, blue-grey, brown and black glazes, producing the wonderfully distinctive appearance associated with Sumida Gawa pottery.
The jug incorporates an elegantly curved handle to the rear and retains its removable domed pottery lid with a small central finial.
Of particular interest is the applied white ceramic signature plaque to the rear, bearing two blue Japanese characters appearing to read Ryōsai (良斎), associated with the important Inoue Ryosai pottery dynasty.
A wonderful piece of Japanese decorative art that would make a fascinating addition to any collection of Oriental ceramics, Japanese Meiji pottery or antique figural jugs.
