George F Pennington Original Vintage Watercolour Painting St Ives Mending Nets

1920 - 1940
Description

Type of artwork: An Original Vintage Watercolour Painting

Artist and Signature: Unsigned but purchased as part of a collection by....

George Farquhar PENNINGTON

He sometimes signed his work with a monogram. Born in Castleford, Yorkshire, the son of a Wesleyan minister, he trained with a firm of architects at Leeds before setting up on his own. He was a successful architect before he retired to take up painting, unsurprisingly he was particularly attracted by interesting buildings and old bridges, the design of Wesleyan chapels being one of his specialities. In 1935, after retirement and determined to learn to paint, he and his wife Hilda travelled through several Mediterranean countries.

In 1939 they settled in Carbis Bay, Pennington studying at John Leonard Fuller's St Ives School of Painting. He put on exhibitions in St Ives in the following years, featuring Sicily and the fruits of a five month sketching tour of Southern Spain and Morocco. His oils, particularly of St Ives street scenes, show the influence of John Anthony PARK. Before the Second World War, he was a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists and a candidate for their hanging committee afterwards. On the death of his wife in 1957 he moved to Chichester, joining local societies but still exhibiting with STISA until 1959.

This original fine art piece is an early 20th-century impressionist watercolour painting on textured paper, created circa 1930. The artwork displays a coastal retreat design vibe with muted ochre and teal pigments, depicting a harbour lighthouse, fishermen figure studies, a quay rail, and sails. Visible details include distinct texturing on the paper grain, light marks, and a small tear around the periphery in fair overall condition. Measuring 40 cm high by 30 cm wide and 0.02 cm deep, the artwork arrives mounted and ready to frame. This painting suits placement on a narrow wall space within a living room, hallway, or study. The composition brings a historical seaside atmosphere indoors, fitting seamlessly into traditional or coastal interior schemes. Homeowners can hang the piece independently or pair it with other vintage maritime artworks to create a gallery wall. The mounted format allows for straightforward framing to match existing room decor.

This regional artistic movement focuses on coastal light, local maritime industry, and harbour views using impressionistic brushwork and a natural palette.

Artists typically apply water-soluble pigments onto heavy textured rag or pulp paper using soft hair brushes to achieve fluid washes.

Look for artist signatures, paper watermarks, age-consistent toning or foxing, and recognisable topographic landmarks such as harbour piers and breakwaters.

Mount the artwork in a clean oak or gilt frame with an acid-free passe-partout to suit contemporary, traditional, or coastal interiors.

Frame the artwork behind UV-protective glass, use archival backing materials, and display it away from direct light and damp conditions.
