Charming 18th Century Georgian Bowfront Miniature Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

A Charming Late 18th Century George III Sheraton Period Mahogany Bowfront Miniature Chest, Of Rare Shallow Proportion, Having Well Figured Top With Boxwood Strung Decoration Throughout And Four Long Drawers With Original Turned & Ribbed Wooden Knobs, Raised On Elegant Original Turned Bun Feet.

This really is a delightful little miniature chest of drawers, possessing a huge amount of charm and character, with a lovely rich colour and surface which has developed naturally over the course of more than 200 years.

Miniature chests of drawers were produced throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and qualities, but examples dating from the late 18th century are considerably harder to find than their Victorian counterparts. This particular example is especially appealing due to its elegant bowfront shape and unusually shallow proportions, which give it a particularly refined appearance.

The boxwood strung decoration is a lovely feature, whilst the original turned and ribbed wooden knobs and delicate little bun feet add enormously to its overall charm. It also retains plenty of old marks, stains, scratches and imperfections, all entirely consistent with its considerable age and contributing to its wonderfully honest appearance.

As with much miniature furniture, its original purpose is uncertain, whether made as a cabinetmaker's sample, an apprentice piece, or simply as a decorative miniature for the home. Whatever its origins, it would look wonderful displayed on a larger chest of drawers, dressing table or occasional table.

A really charming example of late 18th century miniature furniture, with particularly attractive proportions, lovely original features and plenty of genuine character.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this miniature chest has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.

This George III Sheraton period miniature chest of drawers dates from the late 18th century and exhibits a bowfront design executed in warm brown mahogany with boxwood stringing. The piece measures 30 cm high, 32.5 cm wide and 14 cm deep, comprising four graduated long drawers fitted with original turned and ribbed wooden knobs. It stands upon low, turned bun feet and displays an attractively figured top alongside old marks and imperfections consistent with age. In a contemporary home, the miniature serves as a decorative accent well suited for placement on a sideboard top, dressing table, or occasional table. Its shallow proportions and rich surface bring traditional English country house character to living spaces, studies, or hallways, offering a refined focal point while requiring minimal surface area.

Miniature chests were frequently produced during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as cabinetmakers apprentice pieces or salesmens samples to demonstrate craftsmanship and design features to prospective clients.

These pieces were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring boxwood strung inlay, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, and turned wooden or brass hardware.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate drawer linings, natural wood shrinkage consistent with age, and hand-turned or cast fittings rather than modern machine-made components.

A miniature chest serves as a functional tabletop accent on a sideboard, desk, or dressing table, offering compact storage for jewellery, trinkets, or stationery items.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly, avoiding direct sunlight and extreme humidity changes to prevent wood movement.
