This impressionist oil painting on board depicts an Italian port at dusk with moored boats, a prominent domed church building, and distant hills beneath an overcast sky. Dating from around 1960, the artwork employs a muted grey colour palette with subtle blue and pink undertones in the clouds, visible brushwork textures on the water's surface, and a signature in the lower right corner. The composition captures gentle water reflections, moored vessels with slender masts, and architectural elements along the harbour edge. The painting measures 45 x 40 cm. It is mounted inside a quality gilt frame and would hang suitably above a sideboard in a gentleman's library or reception room to introduce a refined coastal atmosphere to a domestic interior.

FAQs

Italian port paintings from this period frequently blend impressionistic brushwork with atmospheric lighting, depicting coastal trading towns, fishing harbours, and classic architecture.

Artists typically used oil pigments suspended in drying oils, applied onto stretched linen canvas, cotton duck, or wooden boards prepared with a gesso ground.

Authentication involves examining craquelure patterns, signature analysis, canvas age and weave density, stretcher bar construction, and signs of period-appropriate varnish oxidisation.

Position marine oil paintings as focal points above a mantelpiece or console table, paired with understated framing to complement contemporary colour palettes.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources. Dust gently with a soft dry brush and consult a professional restorer for surface cleaning.
