Description

Large C.20th Vintage Woodland Lake Landscape Oil Painting – Signed C. Williams

Brief Description:

This is a large, beautiful 20th-century vintage Oil on Canvas Landscape Painting by listed British artist C. Williams.

This wonderfully atmospheric work depicts an idyllic countryside landscape, with an enchanting woodland setting, a meandering country pathway, tranquil waters and beautiful mature trees silhouetted against an expansive evening sky.

The beautifully composed scene draws the viewer's eye along a winding pathway towards the distant tree-lined landscape, whilst the still waters of a foreground pond reflect the soft, golden light of the setting sun.

Of particular appeal is the magnificent sky, which has been beautifully rendered in delicate shades of golden yellow, powder blue, dusky pink and soft lavender.

The artist has demonstrated considerable attention to detail throughout, particularly in the finely observed foliage, slender tree trunks, delicate grasses and natural reflections upon the water.

The composition combines wonderfully soft, romantic colouring with intricate landscape detail, creating a captivating sense of depth, tranquillity and atmosphere.

The painting is signed by the artist, C. Williams, in the lower left-hand corner.

The work is mounted within an impressive, substantial-quality decorative wooden frame, finished in attractive warm gilt and bronze tones, with beautifully detailed carved-effect mouldings and a contrasting cream-coloured inner slip.

This twentieth-century oil painting on canvas depicts an idyllic woodland landscape by British artist C. Williams, rendered in traditional realism. The composition shows an expansive evening sky in shades of golden yellow, powder blue, dusky pink, and soft lavender above mature trees, a meandering country path, and a reflective foreground pond. The artwork is signed by the artist in the lower left corner and measures 78.7 cm high, 109.2 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. The canvas is mounted inside a substantial decorative wooden frame finished in warm gilt and bronze tones with carved-effect mouldings and a contrasting cream-coloured inner slip. Both the painting and the frame are in very good original condition. Suitable for an English country house interior, this piece works effectively when hung above a sideboard in a dining room or living room to add traditional character to the wall space.

FAQs

Twentieth-century landscape oil paintings often combine traditional representational techniques with looser brushwork and varied colour palettes. Artists of this era frequently depicted natural countryside scenes, woodland paths, and bodies of water, capturing natural light and atmospheric depth.

These artworks are created using oil pigments suspended in drying oil, applied to linen or cotton canvas or wood panel. They are typically housed in carved or moulded wooden frames, often finished with gold leaf, gilt paint, or linen liner inserts.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the artists signature, the age-related patination on the reverse of the canvas or board, and natural age cracking known as craquelure. Frame construction and older hanging hardware also indicate age.

Position the painting centrally above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to create a focal point. Combining traditional gilded frames with contemporary furniture creates a balanced contrast within modern schemes.

Dust the surface lightly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding moisture or chemical cleaners. Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with high humidity to prevent fading and canvas warping.
