Pair of Antique French Spelter Allegorical Figures – Mutualité & Paix – C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An interesting and substantial pair of antique French allegorical sculptures, entitled “Mutualité” (Mutual Aid or Solidarity) and “Paix” (Peace), dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, circa 1900.

Dating from the Belle Époque period, these decorative figures are cast in traditional French régule (spelter), a white-metal alloy commonly used for ornamental sculpture, and finished with a dark bronze-effect patination.

The female figure, entitled Mutualité, is depicted in flowing classical robes, with one arm raised and the other holding a small symbolic object. The male figure, entitled Paix, is portrayed in working attire, with industrial and agricultural-inspired attributes, symbolising peace, labour and prosperity.

Both sculptures display attractive period detailing, particularly in the facial expressions, flowing garments and elaborate naturalistic bases. Their respective French titles are prominently incorporated into the lower sections of the castings.

Original Mounting

Of particular interest is the hollow-cast construction visible beneath the figures. One retains an internal metal crossbar with a central fixing hole, suggesting that the sculptures may originally have been mounted onto separate decorative plinths, possibly of wood, marble or another material.

Such mounting arrangements were commonly employed in French decorative sculpture of this period. Any original separate plinths are no longer present.

Dimensions and Weights

* Height: approximately 34 cm each

* Female figure (Mutualité): 1,482 g

* Male figure (Paix): 1,907 g

* Combined weight: 3,389 g

Condition

Offered in unrestored antique condition, with extensive wear, rubbing and losses to the original dark bronze-effect finish, revealing the silvery-grey spelter beneath.

The female figure has significant damage to the lower base, including fractures, cracks and losses to the casting. There is further age-related surface deterioration to both sculptures. The condition and construction are clearly illustrated in the accompanying photographs.

Despite these imperfections, the pair retains considerable decorative character and offers an interesting example of French allegorical sculpture from around the turn of the 20th century.

An appealing matched pair for collectors of French antiques, Belle Époque decorative arts and antique figural sculpture.

Circa 1900. Sold together as a pair.

These antique French allegorical sculptures represent Mutualité and Paix, dating to the Belle Époque period around 1900. Cast in régule spelter with a dark bronze-effect finish, the pair displays expressive facial features, flowing drapery, inscribed title bases, and hollow-cast construction with an internal metal crossbar. The female figure wears classical robes with one arm raised and holds a small symbolic object, while the male figure is in working attire with one arm raised holding a small sign inscribed with the word Pax. The surfaces exhibit extensive wear, rubbing, and losses to the dark bronze-effect finish revealing the silvery-grey metal beneath, alongside significant damage, fractures, cracks, and losses to the lower base of the female figure. Each figure stands 34 cm high. They suit placement on a mantelpiece as a decorative pair in a home today.

Spelter allegorical figures are late nineteenth and early twentieth-century metal sculptures cast to personify abstract concepts such as peace, prosperity, or industry, popularised in France during the Art Nouveau era.

Spelter is a zinc-based alloy that was molten and poured into complex moulds, then finished with a patinated, bronzed, or painted surface to mimic solid bronze at a more accessible weight and cost.

Spelter is lighter in weight than bronze, exhibits white or grey metal where chipped or unpainted on the base, and often features incised titles or French foundry stamps near the foot of the figure.

Positioning a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or flanked across a bookshelf creates structure and historical contrast within contemporary interior schemes.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth or microfibre duster, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or abrasives that can strip the delicate surface patination or painted finish.
