Antique Early Metalware 17thc /18thc Copper Brazier with Fruitwood Turned Handle. Dutch. C1680-c1720.

17th century
Description

A fine example of a late 17thc / early 18thc copper chafing-dish, also known as a brazier....it would have been used to keep a kettle, serving platter, food or simply plates hot, by filling the centre with hot charcoal or embers from the down-hearth fire and then it is brought to the table...this lovely piece of early metalware has an attractive flower /fruit central pattern....(unusual for such a domestic item), pleasing shaped legs which terminate with ball feet and decorative ropework pattern to the top of the rim....I always like to see the rolled copper rivets....a great help in dating these early pieces and it is always a sign of quality when you have an attractive turned fruitwood handle....very good natural patina and has done well to have survived in such excellent condition.

Dutch C1680-C1720.

This Dutch 17th or 18th century brazier, dating between 1680 and 1720, functions as a traditional chafing dish. The piece is formed from warm copper and fitted with a dark brown turned fruitwood handle secured by a metal mount, complemented by three upright rim pegs and short legs ending in ball feet. Visible details include a raised repousse flower and fruit motif enclosed within a rope-twist border on the base, a notched rim, rolled copper rivets, and a natural patina across the surfaces. Measuring 10.8 cm high, 33.7 cm wide, and 21.1 cm deep, the brazier sits neatly on a fireplace hearth or tabletop in a rustic farmhouse setting to hold hot plates or serving dishes.

Braziers were portable vessels designed to hold glowing embers or charcoal. In 17th and 18th-century homes, they provided localized heat for warming rooms, keeping food hot, or lighting pipes.

Early braziers were typically crafted from hand-hammered copper or brass due to their excellent heat conductivity. Handles were often turned from hardwoods like fruitwood or walnut to insulate the users hand from the heat.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand craftsmanship, such as irregular hand-hammered surfaces, dovetail or lap joints, hand-cut rivets, and natural wear patterns near heat points.

An antique copper brazier serves as a tactile decorative object on a fireplace hearth, rustic sideboard, or open shelving, adding rich warm copper tones and historic texture to modern rooms.

To preserve historic value, avoid harsh chemical polishes that remove natural age patina. Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth and apply a clear microcrystalline wax to protect the metal from oxidisation.
