This early eighteenth-century Welsh tridarn is a three-piece court cupboard in the vernacular style, made from dark brown oak. The piece has a three-tiered structure with a top canopy supported by turned columns, three small arched raised panel doors with brass keyhole escutcheons above the midsection, and a lower base with two cupboard doors fitted with small round wooden knobs and ring pulls. Inscribed date carvings appear on the woodwork. It measures 193 cm high, 129 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. Suitable for use in a dining room, living room, or hallway, this cabinet provides storage space for crockery, linen, or books while serving as a focal point. The dark timber finish and traditional proportions suit rustic farmhouse or period interiors.

A tridarn is a traditional three-tier cupboard native to Wales, originating in the late seventeenth century. The name derives from the Welsh words for three parts, referencing its distinct construction comprising a base cupboard, a middle enclosed section, and an open top canopy tier.

Tridarns were predominantly constructed from locally sourced solid European oak. Cabinetmakers utilized peg-and-tenon joinery, raised field panels, turned wooden pillars, and hand-forged iron or brass hardware.

Authentic period examples feature hand-planed oak, pegged joinery, and three detachable sections. They frequently incorporate carved initials, dates across the upper frieze or doors, and distinctive turned drop finials or column supports.

A tridarn serves as a substantial focal point in a dining room, hallway, or open-plan living space. It can be styled by displaying studio ceramics or pewter on the open top tier to contrast with the dark oak wood.

Dust regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the patination. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting.
